Data center operator discovers its audit scope stopped where its biggest risks began
A multi-site edge data center and colocation operator.
The problem
A multi-site edge data center and colocation operator had the right people and a clean SOC 2 record, but leadership was uneasy. Compliance consumed real money, the compliance manager role kept turning over, and no one could say whether security oversight reached beyond the corporate network. Its facilities and customer-facing environments were out of audit scope yet carried the biggest risk.
Why it mattered
Customer trust decides who wins data center business. A stale control or a certification gap could cost renewals and block growth into defense and public-sector work.
What we did
Instead of a months-long assessment, Vizius ran two on-site whiteboard sprints, on compliance economics and on cyber risk, and wrote down what leadership already half knew: the audit covered corporate IT only, equipment outside that scope had no clear owner, and a security problem there had gone unnoticed. It left a started risk register, a cost-of-compliance baseline and GRC tool criteria.
What changed
The engagement led directly to a full CIS gap assessment the next year. Leadership also left with a jointly owned action register and a decision that scope must be settled before tooling or hiring.
