Eleven printer platforms, one deadline: testing one device per family got the certification evidence in time

A global additive-manufacturing equipment maker. Outcome verified

The problem

A global additive-manufacturing equipment maker needed its industrial printer platforms assessed against IEC 62443 to keep selling into Europe. Eleven platforms of very different designs had never had a consistent security assessment. The deadline was fixed, the budget finite, the in-house embedded security specialist gone, and exhaustive testing of every device was unaffordable.

Why it mattered

Without audit-defensible evidence by the end of the third quarter of 2026, certification and European market access were at risk. Leadership also wanted assurance that no one could cause physical harm through a printer or steal firmware.

What we did

Vizius scoped the work to compliance readiness at a defined security level rather than open-ended adversarial testing. It grouped the platforms into families, fully tested one anchor device per family and verified the siblings against it. A small proof of concept validated the model before further families were authorized.

What changed

Three of four authorized engagements have delivered pass or fail verdicts against each foundational requirement. Because findings were escalated during testing, the customer hardened one platform while work was under way, halving its network-exposed services. The fourth engagement is in progress.

Sound familiar?

  • Our European customers are asking for IEC 62443
  • We can't afford to test every device variant
  • We need audit-defensible evidence, not a red team
How we did it

Application & Device Penetration Testing

"Will this app or device hold up before our customers and auditors test it for us?"

We test web apps, APIs and connected devices by hand, chain small findings the way an attacker would, and review code while fixes are still cheap.
